Extracted from the 2nd Benoni website circa 1999:

This is the oldest Group in Benoni. It was founded by St. Dunstan's Anglican Church in 1916 and has been running continuously since then. In it's hey day the Scout Troop was 80 + strong and had it's own brass band. In 1976 the Troop changed to an Air Scout Troop, which it remains today.
The Group has one Scout Troop and one Cub Pack. We have 19 Scouts in the Troop and 3 Scouters. The Scout Troop meets on a Wednesday night from 18h30 to 20h30. The Cub Pack meets on a Friday Afternoon at All Souls Anglican Church.

CLASSIC 2ND BENONI GAMES:
Dizzy Stick Challenge
Equipment - one stave per Patrol (Short - About 1m)
The Patrols stand in Relay formation facing a distance of between 10 and 20 meters to where the stave is lying on the ground. The first member of the patrol will have to run to the stave and place one end on the ground then stand it up place both hands on the top of the stave and place his forehead on his hands. The Scout then spins around the Stave 10 - 15 times. He can then run back to his patrol. Make sure that there is allot of space with few obstacles because the Scout returning will not be running in a straight line. The next member of the patrol can only go once the Previous Scout has touched him hand.
Bucket/Ptl + 1 T-Spoon/Person

      Live Basket Basketball
Equipment - Two Chairs, Basket ball.
Divide the Troop into two equal teams. Each team puts a member of their team on a chair at the back of the opposing teams side of the playing area (where your scoring hoop normally is). The game is played very similar to Basketball excepting that to score you just have to pass it to your Live Basket (your guy standing on the chair). If he falls off whilst catching it, it is a no score, the opposing team may not touch your Live Basket.

Listen and Bash
Equipment - Ball, scarf or blindfold, keys or bell or something noisy
The troop sits in a circle. One person is blindfolded and sits in the middle with the ball. The rest of the troop then passes the keys around the circle. If the Scout in the middle hears the keys he can throw the ball and try "bash" the person with the keys. If he hit the wrong person that person goes to the middle and if he hits the right person he gets to "bash" again
.

Blind Crab Volleyball
Equipment - Low solid "net", (a row of table on their side or a rope with a ground sheet over it will do), ball
The two sides go to their sides and move as crabs. (sitting on the ground, moving with hand and feet). Then you play volleyball as usual. The challenge is that they are blind to where the team is sending the ball back and their movement is limited so team placement is important.

2nd Benoni has a long and varied history - it is among the oldest troops in south africa and there exist many stories of it's glory days.... PLEASE if you know any of these stories could you send them to cyboros@gmail.com with the subject as "2nd Benoni" history. Equally if you have any contributions, such as photo's send them along. If you happen to be an ex-2nd-benonian then why not visit the troop sometime.(see "contact info.")
